WHY UPGRADE

Why Do I Need to Upgrade My Switchboard?

Upgrading your switchboard is essential for safety, compliance and the reliable operation of modern appliances. Key reasons an upgrade may be necessary:

✓Outdated ceramic fuses — these pose a serious fire risk and may result in electrical faults or electric shock. Home insurance providers may also reject fire-related claims if the switchboard is non-compliant.
✓Lack of safety switches (RCD/RCBOs) — older switchboards may only have basic circuit breakers, which do not protect against electric shock.
✓Rental property compliance — it is mandatory in Victoria to upgrade the switchboard in all rental properties to include safety switches.

CONSUMER MAINS

Consumer Mains (Main Supply Cable) Upgrade — When Do You Need It?

Some older homes have main supply cables sized at 6mm² to 10mm², which only allow a maximum current draw of 40A (for 6mm²) or 50A (for 10mm²). This is often insufficient for modern high-demand appliances such as electric ovens, air conditioning systems or electric hot water units.

You may need a consumer mains upgrade if:

✓Installing high-load appliances — if your maximum demand exceeds 40–50 amps, you will need to upgrade to a standard 16mm² supply cable to allow a 63A main switch.
✓Renovating — relocating the switchboard or replacing an outdated/wooden meter box may require a consumer mains upgrade.
✓Switching to 3-phase power — required for large homes or 3-phase appliances (e.g. EV chargers, ducted air conditioning).
